Civil War Candle Craft

3rd – 6th Grade

Candles were the perfect craft to make for this special day. I wasn’t comfortable melting wax and dipping wicks to make candles, so the best alternative was making layered candles using sand wax. It was simple and fun to make.

Materials
Bags of colored sand wax
Small votive jars
Wicks
Hot glue gun
Funnel
Plastic spoons
Brown gift bags with handle
Markers

I bought all of my supplies at Hobby Lobby. First, prepare ahead of time hot gluing the wicks to the bottom of each votive candle jar. That way they are ready to go for the day of the craft. This craft was done in groups of 5, and I had parent volunteers supervise each group.

Then, they chose their colors of wax, held the funnel above the jar opening and spooned the sand through the funnel into the jar. Repeat this step for a different color of wax to get that layered look.

When finished, they could decorate a brown gift bag to put their candle in to take home.
