“Little House” Creative Writing

Reading Comprehension Activities 3rd – 5th grades

Based on “Little House on the Big Woods” and “ Little House on the Prairie” by Laura Ingalls Wilder

One of my favorite childhood classic books are the “Little House Series” by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  During our Westward expansion unit, I read both of her works to my class, “Little House in the Big Woods,” and “Little House on the Prairie.”  Everyday after lunch, I would have my students Drop  Everything And Read. The students loved hearing all about Laura’s adventures on the Frontier, and experiencing some of what she did in classroom activities. I have listed some activities below including some links to where you may find these resources.

Creative Writing – A Letter Home

Have students write a letter back home to their family they left behind giving news about their new life in the new land.  Are you going to school?, make new friends, see any new animals that you didn’t see in the East, how does it feel to be away from what you are used to?
