This is a fun and interactive way to work on learning division. Here I use M& M’s, I mean who doesn’t like M & M’s, but you can use just about anything in place of M’M’s if you’d like. I created a worksheet for free to download. I hope your students have some tasty fun learning their division facts!
Materials
- A large bag of colored candies (example Skittles, M&M’s)

Instructions
First, before you teach the lesson, I would recommend placing 20 candies in a sandwich size ziplock bag for each student. This will save you time of having to count them out for 20 plus students during the lesson. Before you start your lesson, pass out the individual bags of candies and accompanied worksheet. The idea is for students to understand that dividing is separating a large group into smaller equal groups. Once all materials have been distributed, ask the students to take out the number of candies that will be divided. For example, if you’re dividing 10 divided by 2, take out 10 candies and emphasize that 10 is the dividend, the number being divided, and 2 is the divisor, the number we are dividing by. Now, sort/divide the 10 candies into the 2 circles shown on the worksheet. Then, ask how many are in each group. The answer is 5. For additional practice, you can review that multiplication is an inverse operation of division. Multiply the quotient 5, by the divisor 2, and it will equal the dividend 10.
